What exactly is internationalization? At About Education we use the following explanation: "We speak of internationalization when people are increasingly oriented towards foreign countries". Practically this means that you want to know something about another country, about the people who live in another country and how that different culture works. That's just the beginning. Then you may want to do something with it. For example, you want to learn another language or come into contact with people from another culture or you want to travel. Traveling is super fun and interesting, but not always necessary. Just ook around you at work or on the street!
Many people with a non-Western cultuaral background or people who were born in another country work in almost all sectors in the Netherlands. There are also many companies and organizations that cooperate with foreign (sister) companies and organizations. It is important to prepare students well for a career in the Dutch internationally oriented society and knowledge economy. Internationalization in education certainly helps. After all, internationalization is learning from other cultures and the way people work in (or from) another country. Internationalization also helps to develop intercultural skills.
